National Teaching Fellow 2015 Dr Christine Edmead's career began as a research scientist in Pharmacology but since swapping the lab bench for the lectern in 2003 she hasn't looked back. Holding two concurrent part-time University positions for a number of years, as a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (2003-present) and an Educational Projects Officer in the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office (2007-2013), her roles have been wide ranging. Christine has been the driving force behind many teaching innovations including the development of the flipped classroom involving online recordings and self-test quizzes and the use of case studies in lectures and workshops to encourage and develop the application of knowledge. Christine is known for her enthusiastic and interactive approach to teaching, involving use of the electronic voting system to encourage student participation, anecdotal stories, and even using students as DNA! "Christine not only enhances students experiences in lectures with her engaging and entertaining lecture content, but regularly goes beyond her job description to support student learning." (MPharm student 2014). Her work on internationalisation and using group work as a mechanism for student integration contributed to the HEA Teaching International Students project and resulted in the publication of a book chapter in Cross-cultural teaching and learning for home and international students: internationalisation of pedagogy and curriculum in higher education edited by Janette Ryan. In recognition of her work she received three teaching awards in 2014 including the prestigious University of Bath and the British Pharmacological Society Excellence in Teaching Awards. Christine has been a key facilitator in the development programmes for new staff designed to explore strategies for the enhancement of academic practice. She also chairs the Senior Tutor Forum, overseeing the University's personal tutorial system. Her energy, enthusiasm and motivation have meant she has had a huge influence on academic practice which is far reaching across the Institution and beyond. "Having worked with Christine, I am very impressed by her unflagging commitment, enthusiasm, and the way she works with both students and colleagues to greatly enhance the Student Learning Experience." ( Deputy Chief Executive, Students' Union)
