Dr Colin James Lumsden is a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Paediatrician in the NHS. He qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1995 and undertook postgraduate training in Paediatrics in the Northwest region, completing specialist training in 2005 and becoming a consultant paediatrician at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals where he continues to practice as a neonatologist and allergist. Colin has held several postgraduate educational leadership roles including in Foundation training and at Deanery level as a Training Programme Director. He was appointed as head of e-learning by Manchester Medical School in 2009, became the Academic Lead for Year 3 of the MBChB and is now an Associate Programme Director of the MBChB. Impact of work Colin's main area of impact has been in technology enhanced learning and the student experience having instigated the Manchester iPad project in 2011. The use of mobile devices for flexible learning was in its infancy at the time and the successful implementation and consequent impact on the student experience has seen Manchester become a global leader in the field. He has evaluated and has been published in peer reviewed journals within the field of mobile learning as well as directly assisting in the inception of similar projects elsewhere in the UK and further afield. The impact of his work has been recognised not only within academia but also by industry as Manchester Medical School became the first higher education institution in the United Kingdom to be designated by Apple Computers as an Apple Distinguished Programme in 2015. A direct consequence of his work has seen the development and subsequent commercialisation of a software solution (Form ²) that has been licensed to several other HE and charitable education institutions in the UK and Australia. Plans for the future Colin's active research in the field of mobile learning has informed his work and the research will form the basis of his PhD thesis, which he intends to submit later this year. The further development of the software system has opened up exciting avenues in learning analytics, which he intends to pursue as he looks to further define the impact of mobile devices on student learning.
