Dr Elizabeth Burd

Previous to this, she was a senior lecture in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University. She has a first degree in Education and a PhD in Software Engineering and teaches a variety of topics within Software Engineering to final-year and masters level students.

National Teaching Fellow 2009 Institute at the time of award: Durham University Liz Burd is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Newcastle on the East coast of Australia. Previous to this, she was a senior lecture in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University. She has a first degree in Education and a PhD in Software Engineering and teaches a variety of topics within Software Engineering to final-year and masters level students. Liz was also Deputy Dean of Science at Durham, a role which covers a wide remit including student research, teaching and learning activities for the Faculty of Science. She recently led the working group that defined the Universitys eLearning Strategy. Liz also led Durham's Technology Enhanced Learning Research Group. She had a £1.5 million UKP grant funded by the Teaching and Learning Research Programme that focused on investigating how the use of new computing technologies can support education and higher education. Liz was also the Director of the HEFCE Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning's Active Learning in Computing (ALiC). The work of ALiC has resulted in some of the UKs leading research into the design of IT supported learning and research infrastructure. Her research interests are in innovative forms of computing to enhance education and research, the analysis and visualisation of large data sets and animation of software change patterns. She has received many awards for her innovations in supporting teaching, learning and research. She is currently serving as a committee member of a number of internal conferences and regularly reviews for international journals. Liz has collaborated with a number of industrial companies for her research including IBM, Microsoft, British Telecommunication, BAe and Logica. She has also been an active researcher within an ESPRIT consortium and is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
