Dr Fabio Arico is a Senior Lecturer in Macroeconomics at the University of East Anglia and an award-winning teacher, popular amongst students and colleagues for his passion, energy and enthusiasm. His teaching philosophy is grounded on the principle that students should develop academic self-efficacy to progress successfully along their graduate education journey. Fabio uses learning technologies to communicate with students and deliver a personalised dialogic experience even in large-class environments. Fabio is committed to increase student confidence by developing self-assessment skills and promoting self-regulatory learning behaviours. His teaching methods are evidence-based. Consistent empirical evidence demonstrates their effectiveness. Impact of work Fabio's pedagogical innovations to foster student self-efficacy received initial support from the HEA through a Teaching Development Grant. This allowed him to disseminate the findings of his projects and establish a reputation in the sector. During the past two years alone, he has delivered more than thirty presentations, invited talks and teaching development workshops, across the UK and Europe, which registered outstanding feedback and impact. Thanks to this intense dissemination practice, his teaching methods are currently being implemented by an increasing number of colleagues in the wider academic community. On the grounds of his established reputation, HEFCE awarded funding to the University of East Anglia to pilot academic self-efficacy as one of the measures for learning gain. The aim is to evaluate new metrics that shall inform Teaching Excellence Framework assessments. Plans for the future Additional to his ongoing commitment to piloting measures of learning gain, Fabio's research agenda includes exploring the demographic features of the learning-datasets that have been collected over time. Investigating the learning experience of specific groups of students will allow him to devise bespoke adjustments, deliver better learning support, and make his teaching practice even more effective and inclusive. Since his teaching innovations are now widely implemented within different learning environments, he also plans to establish collaborations with colleagues, both inside and outside of his Institution, to investigate and evaluate how pedagogies aimed at enhancing student self-efficacy can be adapted to the teaching of specific disciplines.
