Liz Mossop began her career in higher education after several years working in veterinary practice, using this experience to develop the professional skills components of the new University of Nottingham veterinary curriculum. Teaching vet students topics such as communication skills, ethical reasoning, reflective practice and business skills is crucial for their employability but tricky to get right. Innovative approaches such as a 'Dragon's Den' business game ensure engagement and industry involvement. Liz is a keen advocate of technology in teaching and the #vetfinals Twitter revision club she runs alongside some fantastic colleagues is a great way to connect students during isolated revision periods, encouraging them to problem solve quickly and truly 'think like a vet'! She has long held interests in Open Education Resources and initiated and oversees the largest HE collection of OER - the Nottingham Vets Flickr stream. Impact of work Liz' s experiences in professional skills teaching have led to involvement in a range of other curricula and contexts. Most recently, she has been involved in the Vet Futures project developing strategies for ensuring appropriate professional skills for the vets of 2020. Liz has presented and published extensively on teaching professionalism and she has found it hugely rewarding to receive feedback of her ideas being implemented elsewhere. The #vetfinals Twitter revision club is utilised internationally by final year vet students, and vets in practice wishing to top up their knowledge! The Storify resources created after each session are also widely accessed. Equally her OER has appeared in MOOCs, virtual patients and online resources throughout the world. Plans for the future The veterinary curriculum is ever evolving and part of Liz's role is to oversee delivery at the University of Nottingham to ensure employable vets who are ready to enter this fast-paced profession. She is involved in a large international project examining employability on a much broader scale. She plans to continue to enhance the #vetfinals sessions and grow the suite of revision resources. Meanwhile her 'Little OER' continues to expand, and be utilised more and more.
