Dr Peter Draper

National Teaching Fellow 2013 Dr Peter Draper is Senior Lecturer in nursing at the University of Hull, where he has taught for 25 years. A major focus of Peter's research and teaching is the nursing contribution to the wellbeing of older people. He has a special interest in the impact of nurses' speech on older people, and uses creative writing methods including poetry to sensitise health professionals to the power of words. Peter contributed the report 'Writing with care: creative writing in nursing education' to the Higher Education Academy (HEA) series on innovative pedagogical practices and he has run workshops on the use of creative writing techniques in health professional education, in the UK and internationally. Peter is also interested in the nature of educational innovation, and completed a project for the Leadership Foundation in Higher Education on the experiences of educational innovators. Peter plays a leading role in DARTE, the University of Hull's scheme for awarding fellowships within the UK Professional Standards Framework, and mentors aspiring National Teaching Fellows. As part of his role as academic lead for staff development in the University of Hull's Faculty of Health and Social Care, Peter is currently piloting a scheme to develop colleagues in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Peter is a Principal Fellow of the HEA, a senior fellow of Wollongong University's Academy of Tertiary Teaching and Learning Excellence, a member of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSoTL), and a committee member of the Association of National Teaching Fellows with the role of secretary. In his life beyond the university, Peter enjoys archery, park running, cycling, and hill-walking, and he is an ordained minister in the Church of England. Oh, and dad to five adult children.
