His National Teaching Fellowship project has increased recognition of the value of a Patchwork Text approach to curriculum and assessment as a radical alternative to conventional assessment by essays. Also, he has developed an innovative, person-centred approach to learning how to learn in higher education, called Inquiry into Learning, in which students do action research into the progressive improvement of their practice as learners.
