Dr Philip Cosson completed a three-year Diploma of the College of Radiography at Greenwich in London in 1988. Philip worked in six different hospitals throughout a clinical career that had several highlights. Working alongside Sir Godfrey Hounsfield (the legendary Nobel laureate who developed the CT scanner) was particularly memorable.

In 1992, Philip topped up his diploma, graduating with honours after studying part-time at Kingston University. In the same year, he became a member of Teesside University. After three years as a lecturer, Philip was tempted back into clinical practice, becoming a superintendent radiographer seconded to the information department of a local Trust to progress their electronic patient record project. Postgraduate training in health informatics at University of Sunderland supported this role, and after the project, Philip re-joined Teesside University in 2001 as a senior lecturer. During his academic career, Philip has sought and gained Advance HE Fellowship (formerly the Higher Education Academy), trained in social research methods and gained a doctorate in advancing educational practice in diagnostic radiography. Philip also received a dyslexia diagnosis.

Philip was recognised as national 'Learning Technologist of the Year, 2007' by the Association for Learning Technology for his work in distributed computer simulation in radiography education and co-founded Shaderware Ltd, a radiography training simulation developer in 2006. This company was set up in collaboration with Neil Willis, a former student, and supports over 170 university and college customers worldwide to deliver contextual experiential learning to their students via simulation technology.

Philip has continued to innovate and publish pedagogic research in support of interactive and contextual learning methods and tools in diagnostic radiography education. He has been an invited speaker on this topic at conferences internationally. Philip was the elected representative of Northern region radiography professionals on the national council of the Society of Radiographers 2014-2019. He is currently elected to the College of Radiographers Board of Trustees, serving a five-year term. Philip has also been appointed to the post of Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Canberra.
