National Teaching Fellow 2010 Steve has been responsible for enhancing many aspects of students' personal and professional development; from instigating change in researcher development to introducing new technologies to deliver off-campus and international training for the benefit of both staff and students. He is wholly committed to student diversity and is passionate about providing materials, through varied mediums, to different audiences e.g. for international students, part-time students and students with disabilities. Assisting scholars to explore new approaches to student development is in high demand both at Exeter and nationally, where Steve is involved in running workshops at leading universities. His work has also attracted interest internationally having recently worked with Tsinghua University, the University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore. Steve is a Vitae national GRADschool Director (one of only five in the UK) and a former member of the South-West and Wales Vitae steering group. He also sits on HEFCE's strategic advisory committee for Enterprise and Skills, where he contributes to high level discussions about workforce development and graduate employability. Before working at Exeter Steve assisted in setting up the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES). He has also organised over 250 educational conferences and workshops nationally and established a new learning and teaching publication for the GEES academic community. He has been successful in attracting over £250,000 for a wide-range of student support projects at Exeter, regionally and also nationally including a collaborative online researcher development project with Bath, Bristol and Exeter universities. Steve is currently involved in a £48 million project which will provide a new heart for the centre of the Streatham campus in Exeter. This will create an inspirational mix of outside and inside space. Specifically, he is leading on bringing together 12 disparate student support services to provide a state-of-the-art student services centre, including a 'one-stop-shop' reception, formal and informal learning space and immersive information areas. Steve is a University of Exeter Teaching Fellowship award holder and an Association of University Administrators National Award for Excellence recipient.
