Head of Diagnostic Imaging

Emma Hyde is a diagnostic radiographer, with 24 years’ experience. For the first ten years of her career she worked in clinical practice as a diagnostic radiographer in various NHS Trusts within the East Midlands.

Whilst her specialist area of clinical practice was CT and MRI scanning, she was also passionate about patient care and student education. As her career progressed she became more and more involved in education, until she moved into academia as a Lecturer in 2006.

She became Head of Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Derby in 2013. There are nine programmes within the DI discipline area; BSc Hons Diagnostic Radiography, MSc Pre Registration Diagnostic Radiography, MSc Medical Ultrasound, Assistant Practitioner to Radiographer Bridging programme, Return to Practice in Diagnostic Radiography, PG Cert Image Reporting, PG Cert DXA Reporting, PG Cert Osteoporosis & Falls and BOst Osteopathy. DI is one of nine discipline areas within the College of Health and Social Care, which is one of the University’s five Colleges.

Emma is, at heart, a researcher and has carried out multiple projects focused on her passion for student experience on clinical placement and patient-centred care. She is currently sharing the findings of a large nationally funded study investigating patient-centred care in diagnostic radiography via journal articles and conference papers to the DI community.

As well as undertaking her own research, she strongly believes in developing approaches to support her team to be active researchers and disseminate their own work. This has led to a thriving research community within the team which is having a positive impact on teaching and learning through influencing curriculum design and creating research role models. Despite having a busy leadership and management role for the last seven years, she still loves teaching on the DI programmes taking great pleasure from the contact with students. She feels privileged to be able to share with them her values and beliefs, and hopes to inspire them to be highly skilled, patient-centred radiographers.
