Marcia Ody

National Teaching Fellow 2015 Marcia Ody is a passionate champion of student engagement and peer education and has, over the last 14 years, developed and led the Manchester 'Students as Partners' programme.  Marcia has driven the rapid expansion of Peer Mentoring and the nationally and internationally acclaimed Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) programme at Manchester and has been proactive in establishing effective, sustainable structures to support the 1650 Mentors/Leaders who are trained every year. She has been highly influential in making peer education a mainstream activity within the University and beyond. The UK National Centre for PASS was established under Marcia's leadership and she has been the national certified trainer for Supplemental Instruction/PASS since 2009. She has trained 300 colleagues from 76 universities/colleges in the UK, Ireland and beyond. Marcia is known as a dynamic and innovative trainer supplementing traditional methods with simulation, games, enquiry and extensive modelling of the principles of experiential learning. Marcia has an excellent national and international reputation and has disseminated her work in numerous publications and at a number of prestigious conferences. The fundamental principle underpinning her personal approach is that of creating partnerships between staff and students to develop a community of learners and Marcia is well known for her empowerment and professional development of others. Marcia works part time at Manchester and, outside of her primary role, enjoys using her extensive external networks to further her own professional development and that of others. Marcia has been highly influential in developing the student voice agenda, playing an active role in designing and delivering a range of opportunities for students to inform the development of the curriculum, institutional policy, strategy and practice. She led the engagement of students in the design of the Universitys Learning Commons, a £23 million development whose team approach won 2014 Guardian University Award. Her use of students as co-consultants is highly regarded across the sector, as is her ability to build capacity for this work wherever possible through coaching, training and supporting colleagues.
