National Teaching Fellow 2010 Peter is an Aston graduate and returned as a Teaching Fellow in 1999 after working in further education, counselling and social work. In 2008 he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in recognition both of his pedagogical research and his inspirational teaching and in 2009 became Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching in the School of Life and Health Sciences. Peter has a direct and remarkably engaging teaching style that inspires students at all levels. A central theme in Peter's teaching has been the importance of relationships. As well as tutorial support this includes creating opportunities for students to engage with each other and to form relationships with staff. His tutoring is much appreciated. One wrote "I just wanted to say thank you for being such a fantastic personal tutor over the past four years and for giving me so much moral support." Peter has developed a transition programme for first year students and a Certificate in Pre-Professional Development for placement students. He has also been a pioneer user of ICT and has focussed on using e-technology to promote engagement. This led to his short listing for the Times Higher Award for Outstanding ICT Initiative in 2007. Among other things he has explored a podcasted audio magazine and learning through a virtual adventure environment. Peter has also supported student writing through the Write Now CETL and promoted teaching in his discipline through the HEA subject centre and the EUROPLAT project. Peter was nominated for the British Psychological Society award for excellence in teaching psychology in 2005 and was awarded university teaching fellowships in 2006 and 2007. Peter's students see him as a particularly caring and approachable lecturer who supports them at critical points from application to graduation. One of his proudest moments was being given a standing ovation by his students at their graduation in 2007, to the surprise of himself and the platform party, when he was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship.
