National Teaching Fellow 2011 Irene Anderson is a Principal Lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work and is an associate of the University's Learning and Teaching Institute. She has made a significant impact through expertise in teaching, facilitation and leadership. Irene's students are predominantly qualified nurses on the Tissue Viability (wound care) programme. She has a particular expertise in educational aspects of leg ulcer management where she is currently undertaking doctoral research into educational frameworks and competence. She is Chair of a voluntary organisation, the National Leg Ulcer Forum, has a wide publication history, reviews for several journals, is regularly invited as an external speaker and runs many events including bespoke courses for health care trusts. Irene encourages her students to publish and many have won awards and promotions. She developed a competency framework which is widely used and has a network of practice assessors including many former students. In 2009 she was invited to run a wound care course for surgeons and nurses in Romania and was an invited reviewer for the 2010 NHS Scotland SIGN leg ulcer guidelines. In addition to University- wide activities in support of technology-enhanced learning, from 2006-2010 Irene managed the Change Academy for Blended Learning Enhancement (CABLE) project, initially for the HEA pilot Pathfinder programme. She led over 100 staff and 25 students to transform learning and teaching practice in a wide variety of disciplines across the University. Sustainable outcomes are inherent in the embedding of blended learning in academic schools and continued innovations in practice. Irene was also instrumental in a winning bid to disseminate techniques in support of other institutions instigating change. The Co-director of the Technology-Enhanced Learning Team at Leeds Metropolitan University said of Irene: "...highly supportive critical friend...willing to share ideas and resources openly with others, enhancing the quality of student experiences way beyond her own institution". Irene's success lies in her understanding of the impact on students when staff are enabled and influenced to change practice and develop skills through the application of sound pedagogy and effective support networks.
