Professor Alan Clements

National Teaching Fellow 2002 Until his retirement in December 2008, Alan Clements was Professor of Computing in the School of Computing at the University of Teesside. Alan has been at the University for 30 years and specialises in teaching computer architecture. Alan's project will create an extensive set of web-based tools to support teaching and learning in computer architecture. These tools, ranging from essays to complex animated visualisations to computer programs, will be made available to teachers and students both nationally and internationally. Since becoming a National Teaching Fellow, his academic life has changed considerably and he has received two international awards for computer science education. In particular, Alan has worked with the IEEE Computer Society (the largest professional association of computer scientists, based in Washington, DC) for over ten years. Alan has run international student competitions, is editor in chief of Computer Society Press, and will chair the Computer Society's Educational Activities Board in 2009. Alan is also active in international computer science curriculum development. Because of his international work, Alan was asked to become a visiting professor at UCI, a university just outside Havana, Cuba.
