Professor Gary Beauchamp

National Teaching Fellow 2015 Professor Gary Beauchamp's teaching is influenced both by his early career as a primary school teacher and his extensive research and regular engagement since with real learning situations, the professionals who work in them and learners of all ages. His research into how information and communications technology (ICT) is used to enhance learning and teaching informs his teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Gary's extensive experience as an educator helps him to challenge his students at all levels of study, to question their fundamental beliefs about learning and find new ways of understanding how they learn and the role of ICT within it. One student wrote: "Gary is the best lecturer I have had throughout university just because he cares about the class and each individual. He gives the same time to everyone in the class and helps them reach their potential." Through his role in the School of Education, Gary supports colleagues to increase their confidence by both challenging and supporting in equal measure. He has mentored and inspired new and early career academic staff, in the UK and beyond, one of whom wrote: "Since starting my new career as a lecturer Professor Gary Beauchamp has inspired me and nurtured my growing confidence for teaching in higher education. Gary strives for creative and energetic teaching styles, which is much appreciated by students and so our collaborative work has fuelled my passion for working with students to extend their engagement and critical reflection." Gary has published widely in academic and professional journals, as well as writing commissioned research and reports. He has extensive experience of acting as an external examiner in many universities and has also provided expert advice about the effective use of ICT at a national and local level in a range of educational settings. He is currently working on a European project with partners from Germany, France, Turkey, Holland and Belgium, providing resources for teachers on how to use interactive technologies in the learning of a second language.
