Professor Hisham Khalil is a clinical academic with an integrated practice as an Associate Dean of a Faculty including the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences, he is also an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery Consultant in the NHS. Throughout his career, he has been committed to the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. This spanned three Universities, two Surgical training programmes and includes an active teaching practice with local, regional and national assessment roles. He has a Doctorate Degree in Otolaryngology and a Masters in Clinical Education. He was awarded Principal Fellow of the HEA in 2015. Impact of work Hisham believes his work has had an impact at multiple levels including curriculum design and development, quality assurance of teaching activities, mentorship, engaged student learning, selection and admissions, introduction of educational innovations, and provision of high quality learning resources. He took a lead on curriculum development at University of Plymouth and his approach to quality management of medical education has gained local, national and international recognition. He has contributed to a number of national pilots and consultations through the General Medical Council including the 'Approval of Trainers' pilot and 'Enhancing Patient Safety Through Medical Education', leading his institution's team in the HEA engaged-student learning initiative. As a GMC Associate, he has a national role in medical school accreditation and has recently led a project on the recognition of medical specialties in the Republic of Ireland. Through peer-reviewed publications, local, national and international activities and presentations he has contributed to the development of colleagues and the body of evidence in medical education. Plans for the future Hisham plans to play a significant role in widening participation of students from all backgrounds in healthcare professions training through engagement programmes with existing students and staff. He will continue with production of high quality open access learning resources including mobile applications that enhance the learning experience of students and development of staff in the healthcare professions. He also hopes to expand his efforts of medical education and surgical training at an international level, particularly in underprivileged communities.
