National Teaching Fellow 2003 Institution at the time of award: Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry John McLachlan is Professor of Medical Education and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medicine at Durham University. His work has developed from science teaching and research into international leadership in the field of anatomy, in which students integrate visualisation of the human body with an appreciation of its emotional significance. In his project, John has explored the impact on medical students of the living rather than the deceased human body, by using medical imaging and the living rather than the traditional cadaver. Students will have the opportunity to take part in joint activities with artists and electronic medical imaging practitioners, the interactions and consequences being recorded by a researcher. The interaction between different views of the body has been of particular interest in this project.
