National Teaching Fellow 2008 Mark Greenwood is Consultant/Honorary Clinical Professor in Medical Education in Dentistry at Newcastle University and has a remit to develop the teaching of general medicine and surgery, pathology, pharmacology and microbiology. He has integrated these disciplines into an innovative course of human disease and revolutionised this area of teaching gaining high levels of student attainment and satisfaction. Mark qualified in dentistry in Manchester in 1986, medicine in Leeds in 1996 and a PhD from Newcastle University in 2005. He has surgical fellowships in Dentistry, General Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery. His clinical background gives authenticity and relevance to his teaching and his dual role resonates with the students, as one student said: "Dr Greenwood is an excellent teacher with the perfect balance of detail for our needs as dental students." In 2006 Mark was nominated by the students for the Dental Defence Union (DDU) Teacher of the Year Award which he subsequently won. The ward is designed to recognise teachers who have "inspired and motivated" students and he is the only teacher with an honorary academic contract to have won the award. He was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2008. In 2003 a highly successful series of papers on general medicine and surgery was published in the British Dental Journal (BDJ) and was consistently top of the journal's hit list on the web. The BDJ then made the series into a book. In his clinical discipline, he has co-authored a textbook aimed at the general dental practitioner which has received excellent reviews. Mark is a great proponent of the non-threatening teaching environment - a break from the traditional perception of medical/dental education of the past. This is recognised by the students one of whom commented: "It never seems wrong to ask Mr Greenwood any question." Mark is currently writing a comprehensive text on human disease which will cover the entire scope of the subject. It is due for publication during 2009.
