Professor Mary Eileen Thornton

National Teaching Fellow 2004 Mary Thornton is a 2004 National Teaching Fellow, a former Association of National Teaching Fellows Committee member, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is currently  Professor of Education  in the School of Education at the University of Hertfordshire. Her NTF project focused on widening participation and the improvement of accessible learning and teaching, nationally and internationally, in order to better meet the needs of increasingly diverse student cohorts in higher education. She is leader of a UK-India Educational Research Initiative (UKIERI) project, working in collaboration with the TATA Institute of Social Science (TISS), Mumbai, on widening participation issues.

Originally a mature entrant to primary teaching, Mary taught in Brent schools before moving into higher education 23 years ago, first as a teacher educator and gender researcher, then as Assistant Director Learning and Teaching at the University of Hertfordshire's  Learning and Teaching Institute, focusing on HE research and staff development programmes.
