National Teaching Fellow 2008 Professor Sally Brown is now an Independent Consultant, Visiting professor at Plymouth, South Wales and Liverpool John Moores Universities and Emerita professor at Leeds Beckett University where she was at the time of award, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Assessment, learning and Teaching. Originally trained as a classroom teacher of English and therapeutic drama, she was previously Director of Membership Services for the Institute for Learning and Teaching (later the Higher Education Academy). Prior to that she worked at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle for almost 20 years as a lecturer, study-skills practitioner, educational developer and Head of Quality Enhancement. Growing from her commitment to student learning, Sally has co-written or co-edited more than 30 books and is an enthusiastic keynote speaker and workshop facilitator in the UK and internationally on innovative teaching approaches, leading change, inclusivity and especially assessment. In a career which has to date spanned over 40 years, Sally has worked in education in schools, colleges, the prison service, further education, universities and the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILTHE). As Director for Membership Services at the ILTHE, she established the original National Teaching Fellowship Scheme and she is now Chair of the Association of National Teaching Fellows. Sally is well-regarded throughout the UK and internationally for her expertise in, and enthusiasm for, assessment, learning and teaching. She has raised the profile of publications in these subjects, often co-authoring to help novice writers acquire confidence. She initiated the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) book series, is now currently Series Editor for Palgraves Learning and Teaching series, was founding editor of the journal Active Learning in Higher Education, and writes and reviews for peer-reviewed journals. Shortlisted for the Times Higher Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2006 and one of the first to gain Fellowship of SEDA and Senior and Principal Fellowships of the Higher Education Academy, she continues to be active in scholarship, publications, consultancy and mentoring.
