Rebecca Huxley-Binns

National Teaching Fellow 2012 Rebecca Huxley-Binns is an experienced teacher of law at all levels. Having started teaching GCSE and A level law in 1992, she was Head of Law at Franklin College in Grimsby from 1996 to 2002, after which she joined Nottingham Trent University as a lecturer. She was appointed Reader in Legal Education in 2010 and Nottingham Law Schools Learning and Teaching Coordinator in 2011. She was delighted to be awarded UK Law Teacher of the Year 2010. Her nomination commented: "Rebecca's humour and enthusiasm makes students believe that they are not being lectured but are activity involved in the discussion of the law. Such a style means, unsurprisingly, that her lectures are always full. Seminars are another demonstration of Rebeccas ability to make students feel comfortable with the law and openly to voice opinions and hypothesis on legal issues. By encouraging active participation and hypothesising counsels submission, Rebecca ensures that students grasp the law in application. She does not teach just to pass exams, she teaches for students fully to understand ... As such it is more than apparent that Rebecca views each and every student as an individual. Her personal commitment to them and the support she offers each in turn encourages them to perform to the best of their ability." Becky currently teaches Criminal Law and Critical Legal Thinking on the undergraduate Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programmes. She is also widely published on legal education, criminal law, the English legal system and the law of evidence. As well as teaching, she has a number of roles within the Law School; she chairs the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Group and is Co-Director of the Centre for Legal Education. Becky has also been a senior examiner for A level law, principal examiner for Criminal Law for the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) and is an experienced external examiner to university Law Schools. Becky is Honorary Secretary of the Association of Law Teachers. She convenes the National Law Student Forum and in that role is an Academic Associate of the HEA (2012).
