Gail Kinman

Gail Kinman is Professor of Occupational Health Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London and the University of Nottingham. She is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and the Academy of Social Sciences.

Gail is a Trustee of the Council for Work and Health and chairs the Society of Occupational Medicine’s Occupational Psychology Special Interest Group. Gail has recently been working with several bodies, such as Public Health England, the Society of Occupational Medicine, Education Support and the British Psychological Society to formulate guidelines to help organisations and individuals manage the demands posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath.

Gail’s general area of expertise is in stress and work-life balance in knowledge intensive and emotionally demanding professions. She has a long-standing interest in the wellbeing of academic employees and has conducted several large-scale studies in the university sector in the UK – most recently in 2021. Gail’s research findings have been published widely and presented at national and international conferences. They highlight the effects of the changing role of academic employees, the steady rise in pressure from several areas and the high levels of job-related stress, mental health problems and work-life conflict. Recent work identifies ways to improve wellbeing in universities from a multi-level perspective.
