Rose Griffiths is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Leicester. She began her teaching career as a secondary school mathematics teacher, and has also taught in pre-school, primary, special and adult education. Rose's work in teacher education since 1990 has inspired hundreds of student teachers to become confident and effective teachers of mathematics, and has enhanced the practice of experienced teachers in schools throughout the country.

Julia Pointon works in the discipline of Human Resource Management and Organisational Studies. She combines academic management with a strong interest in the practice of learning and teaching in higher education. She is involved in curriculum and programme development, teaching, research and in working with an extensive range of external international partners and stakeholders. She is Principal Lecturer and programme Director in the Business School at DeMontfort University, where her work provides a national focus for institutional teaching and learning excellence for international students. Julia has recently completed her Doctorate in Education.

Sue Burkill is the Head of Education Enhancement at the University of Exeter. Providing a high quality learning experience is important to the University and Sue has a pivotal role to play in ensuring that this happens. Her three careers to date have involved an exciting mix which Sue has enjoyed immensely. For 25 years she taught geography in schools and higher education.

Richard Hall demonstrates a unique set of qualifications for excellence. As De Montfort University's e-Learning Co-ordinator since 2002, he provides strategic guidance, manages national pedagogic projects, and builds institutional networks of academic and support staff. He is also an excellent mentor and teacher in postgraduate Education and undergraduate History.

Paul Raffield joined the School of Law in 2004 and has taught several subjects on the core undergraduate curriculum, including contract, tort and constitutional & administrative law. Currently, Paul runs the tort module, and teaches two optional modules of his own devising: 'Origins, Images and Cultures of English Law' and 'On Trial: Shakespeare and the Law'. Both of these courses incorporate innovative teaching practices and are taught in performance-linked teaching spaces: the Reinvention Centre (a HEFCE-funded, collaborative project between the Department of Sociology at Warwick and the School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes, promoting new methods of research-based teaching and learning) and the HEFCE-funded CAPITAL Centre (Creativity And Performance In Teaching And Learning).

Dr James Busfield is a senior lecturer in the  School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary, University of London. He joined QMUL from industry in 1994 and he has worked tirelessly using his previous industrial experience and current internationally recognised research in polymers and design to inspire and motivate students by ensuring learning is an active experience.

Alan Hayes is the Director of Teaching in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath. In his relatively short time at Bath he has had a major impact on many aspects of his discipline and Department, from instigating change through his work on the Honours degree in Computer Science, to introducing new educational technologies which have benefitted both staff and students.

Ellen Roberts began her career as a civil servant working in central government and is currently on secondment to the Department of Social Policy and Social Work at the University of York. Throughout her career, Ellen has demonstrated a deep commitment to supporting and enabling professional development within the public service sector. Ellen is responsible at York for innovative e-learning Masters programmes for managers in public policy and management, which recruit from over 40 countries, in both developed and developing parts of the world.

Ged Byrne was appointed senior lecturer and consultant surgeon in Manchester in 2001 and Hospital Dean for Clinical Studies in 2004. During his eclectic training as an academic surgeon in Glasgow, India and the West Midlands he developed a keen interest in postgraduate surgical teaching and was Secretary and President of the Association of Surgeons in Training. He combines clinical practice as a surgeon and responsibility for delivery of the undergraduate curriculum to 450 Manchester medical students with the innovation, development and evaluation of high quality learning and assessment tools.

Institution at the time of award: University of Derby. Dr Des Hewitt is Head of Primary Teacher Education at the University of Warwick. At the time of his award in 2009, Des was Assistant Head of Teacher Education at the University of Derby. For over ten years, he has been teaching with enthusiasm, passion and a concern for others. These are the values he holds as important for the next generation of primary school teachers. Story is at the centre of much of the learning in his primary English sessions.

Denise Robinson entered teaching to work in a career that would allow her to support widening participation and originally started teaching in Further Education institutions that then (and still do) work closely with the community and the lower socio-economic groups. Over the years she has maintained this philosophy and initiated and introduced courses that would be attractive to those students who previously had been excluded, directly or indirectly, from educational opportunities and in so doing, developed teaching approaches that were also appropriate.

Institute at the time of award: Oxford Brookes University. How does learning to play the Javanese gamelan help 200 people to understand plagiarism? Ask Jude Carroll. Her hundreds of educational development workshops around the world make use of creative and innovative activities to help colleagues to deter plagiarism and explore the experience of international students. Jude has taught in secondary schools and in Further and Higher Education in Ghana, the US, Sweden and the UK. At the time of her award and up until 2011, she worked as Principal Lecturer in Higher Education pedagogy in the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development (OCSLD) at Oxford Brookes, where she taught on and led the postgraduate course to accredit HE teachers.
