Derek Raine is Professor of Interdisciplinary Science and Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Science in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester. I am also director of The Physics Innovations CETL (piCETL) at Leicester and Director of Teaching in the Department of Physics. My research interests have included Relativity, Cosmology, General Relativistic Quantum Field Theory, Astrophysics and more recently, Complex Systems and Science Education.

Nicola Rees is Course Director, Admissions tutor and a Principal Lecturer of the School of Law. She has influenced the rethinking of law teaching at Kingston, redesigned all the publicity material and the induction programme, and has developed several support initiatives including a peer support scheme. She has led teams from Kingston to success in competitions, including representing England and Wales at the International Client Counselling Competition in 2001 and 2004.

Institution at the time of award: Northumbria University. Liz McDowell was Director of the CETL in Assessment for Learning (AfL) at Northumbria University. The award of CETL status was the culmination of around 10 years of active research and development in assessment with a special focus on the student experience. Liz has worked in academic development roles for many years and still teaches on programmes for new lecturers and in CPD (continuing professional development) and supervises a number of PhD students. Alongside NTFS, Liz holds a personal chair in teaching and learning at her university. Liz is committed to assessment that enables and promotes student success and is working towards this vision at Northumbria and beyond through the CETL AfL.

A lifelong learner at the University, Frank taught sociology from 1968 to 1990 before starting to develop customer-focused approaches to learning in the workplace in 1991. These work-based learning initiatives in the University subsequently have included foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in sales management, applied bio-medical science, community justice (probation), flight testing, early years education, information operations, logistics, business, management, computing and engineering. These learning in work degrees have been tailored to the professional development needs of individuals, or to meet the requirements of professional institutes and business organisations.

Michael Manogue is Professor of Dental Education at the University of Leeds and Director of Learning and Teaching in the Leeds Dental Institute. He is Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Dental Education. His research interests are focused primarily upon clinical assessment, particularly in dentistry. His PhD study concerned the OSCE mode of assessment and provided a critical rationale for its use in undergraduate dental students.

Institution at the time of award: Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. John McLachlan is Professor of Medical Education and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medicine at Durham University. His work has developed from science teaching and research into international leadership in the field of anatomy, in which students integrate visualisation of the human body with an appreciation of its emotional significance.
