Institute at the time of award: University of Leeds. I am concerned with pedagogic identities in further, adult and higher education, and more broadly within professional learning and pedagogies. I teach those working in pedagogic roles with others. For example, on the Masters in Clinical Education I teach clinical colleagues who themselves teach in the clinical workplace; on the Masters in Lifelong Learning, I work with professionals in a wide range of contexts who in turn with work with learners; on the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Further Education), I work with teachers in the learning and skills sector. I was awarded a three-year University Teaching Fellowship  from the University of Leeds in January, 2008.

John Fieldhouse credits much of his academic success to his industrial experience. An apprentice trained engineer with 19 years' industrial experience, he graduated with a first class Honours degree after just two years of study. It is this blend of industry and academia which has forged John's firm belief that students need realistic experiences if they are to appreciate their subject and reach their potential. He promotes the idea that students are professional engineers working towards a qualification with demonstrable respect that he says brings the best out of them.

Robert O'Toole is a technologist, educator and philosopher with over ten years of practical experience in helping learners and teachers to find tools that extend and enhance their capabilities. He believes that: "Technological choices have a critical influence upon learning outcomes. Students and teachers who are able to consistently make good choices are far more likely to succeed."

Dr Duncan Reavey, Principal Lecturer (Learning and Teaching) at the  University of Chichester, has a teaching philosophy which challenges the learning of theory alone, when so much more can come from living the experience. He puts this point of view into practice in his work with undergraduate and graduate students in subjects as diverse as primary science education, environment and development, sustainability, and adventure education.

Rayya Ghul is a Senior Lecturer of Occupational Therapy and Programme Director of the MSc Advanced Occupational Therapy Practice in the Department of Allied Health Professions at Canterbury Christ Church University. A passionate advocate for the power of occupational therapy her enthusiasm has found a natural outlet in higher education which, she believes, has the power to transform the lives of both students and staff.

Dr Chris Ricketts is Director of Assessment for Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. Widely regarded as the University of Plymouth's assessment guru, Chris led the university-wide implementation of computer-aided assessment. This is of real value to students because it gives them greater control over their own assessment timing and provides instant feedback. After joining the University of Plymouth Chris's interests turned towards the importance of assessment as part of the learning process and the award of the new Peninsula Medical School created a need for such assessment expertise.

Professor Angela Goddard is Head of Subject for Languages and Linguistics at York St John University. She teaches on undergraduate programmes in English Language and Linguistics within the Faculty of Business and Communication. Her work at York St John continues a lifetime contribution to the study of English Language. In 1983, Angela helped to establish the first A Level in English Language, creating a whole new curriculum for schools. Michael Hoey, Baines Professor of English Language at Liverpool University, comments on this achievement: "Angela Goddard is one of a small number of people who have changed the status of English Language in the UK both in sixth forms and at Universities."

I have recently been appointed Chair of the Teaching, Learning and Staff Development Committee for the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at London South Bank University (LSBU) having just completed my term as Undergraduate Programme Director for Psychology. In this role I will be involved in strategic initiatives associated with issues such as retention, e-learning and employability.

Sue Robson is Principal Lecturer and Subject Leader for Early Childhood Studies at Roehampton University. A deep commitment to developing the knowledge, skills and understanding of students and tutors, and a passionate concern for Early Childhood, underpin her work. Sue is a University Teaching Fellow, conducting the Student Authored Books as a tool for Learning Enhancement (SABLE) project, about which students have said: "The best module of this year". "End result will be as good if not better than a piece of paper that shows I have a degree."
Job Title:Consultant/Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Mark Greenwood is Consultant/Honorary Clinical Professor in Medical Education in Dentistry at Newcastle University and has a remit to develop the teaching of general medicine and surgery, pathology, pharmacology and microbiology. He has integrated these disciplines into an innovative course of human disease and revolutionised this area of teaching gaining high levels of student attainment and satisfaction.
